Jubilee 2025

A Jubilee Year is a significant moment in the life of the Church.  Proclaimed every twenty-five years since the thirteenth century, the celebration of jubilee includes pilgrimages, processions, celebration of Mass and an invitation to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. These liturgical celebrations are opportunities to receive the Lord’s mercy, especially through the practice of Jubilee indulgence, and lead to the performance of works of mercy.

The theme for this Jubilee Year is Pilgrims of Hope. The Jubilee invites you to be a pilgrim of hope. For Christians, hope is anchored in the encounter with Jesus whose life, death and resurrection reveals God’s transforming love. Our hope in God is renewed constantly in the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Father and the Son, who is given, even now, to the community of believers.

The Holy See has designated a number of Jubilee Days throughout 2025 to recognize and celebrate groups of people and various ministries in the Church.  We will recognize those groups here at Saint Joseph Catholic Parish through our liturgies and other formats. IN this Jubilee Year of Hope, may we grow in our understanding of the “Hope does not disappoint.” (Rom 5:5) and share that Hope with others.

Plenary Indulgence

The Vatican outlined the many ways that Catholics can obtain a plenary indulgence during the 2025 Jubilee Year. Catholics have the opportunity to gain indulgences by making pilgrimages, prayerful visits to specific churches, or by practicing works of mercy during the holy year.

A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ to remove the temporal punishment due to sin.

Jubilee Prayer

Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
Amen

What is the Jubilee Year?

The Jubilee is a special year of grace. The Catholic Church started the Holy Year tradition in 1300 with Pope Boniface VIII, now it occurs every 25 years so that each generation can take part in at least one Holy Year.
